Poor Mom is busy raising 2 rambunctious kids working as an Editor for http://parentclick.com and that doesn't leave a whole lot of time for finding AND posting the best deals and tips on savings. Poor Mom has and still has 3 e books and a website offering , in my opinion the simplest and most effective method of couponing and saving on everything at http://learntocoupon.com . If you are here to learn to coupon ( i'll bet you are watching extreme couponing ) you are in a good place. You can learn to stockpile, some terminology and lots of tips to save money on clothes, vacations, utilities and more . What you are not going to find a lot of is updated content, at least for a while.
Poor Mom was fun , couponing is fun but sometimes life gets in the way and we have to let some things go for a while, this is one of those things. But before I sign off let me leave you with the Golden Rules of Couponing , something a few of the "t.v. extreme couponers" don't know or maybe forgot. If you follow the Golden Rules for couponers I PROMISE the cashier, manager and your fellow shoppers and couponers won't curse youi out the door .
1. Obey the lane limits ( 15 is 15 folks , with coupons 7 is 15 it's double the work)
2. Be organized and ready, especially if you are Rolling deals
3. Be courteous too. Just because you are the customer doesn't give you the right to act rude .
5 Don't CLEAR the shelves , you weren't raised by wolves ...were ya .
6. If you don't need it or won't use it and you don't donate you are foolish, selfish and ruining it for the rest of us .
7. Have fun, it's not supposed to stress you out !

Target Freebies
No freebies this week but Kelloggs bakery products like Nutri-grain bars and Pop Tart Minis (new) are buy 4 @$2.50 get a $5.00 gift card. This is a great deal to roll if you already have a $5 gift card from previous transactions . There are alot of coupons circulating for Nutri-grain and pop tarts . Most coupns will bring the per box price down to $1.50 , so when you check out 4 boxes of Kellogg's - coupons and your $5 Target gift card would cost you $1 plus tax OOP .

Roll this deals as many times as you can or want , .25 / box of Kelloggs is a fantastic price. My Cut- off price is .50 per box so anything under that is a bonus.

Savings Angel Review

I've been testing and now reviewing Savings Angel for almost 30 days. I wish I could say Savings Angel was an invaluable service, but that wouldn't be true, at least for me. If you know nothing about couponing and live in the Midwest or Phoenix, you will probably be able to score some deals using Savings Angel with minimal effort. In exchange for this information you pay a hefty fee of $19.95 a month, plus whatever you pay for your Sunday Newspaper, plus an almost daily email encouraging you to share the opportunity with others and make money. If you're not interested in harassing your friends to join Savings Angel these emails can be rather annoying ( not to mention the phone calls) . Also , since I am trying to cancel my membership within the 30 day window , Savings Angel doesn't make it easy . You have to hunt around the site to find a non existant link to get your refund. I finally just emailed the customer service.
Also the "user agreement" you are supposed to read before signing up located here , doesn't have much info . Click the link and you'll see what I mean.
The biggest downer of this whole system is the hefty price tag for giving you information you could obtain from other similar sources for much less. So if you want to make money by passing on the Savings Angel opportunity , get it. There are many people who would spend ( what amonts to my usual weekly grocery bill) $19.95 to save $19.95 . If you are looking to save money and spend less try some alternative sites that cover grocery stores in your area. Jami

Have you ever met a helicopter mom. No ? Well let me introduce myself , my name is Jami and I hover. With the advent of "Super-bugs" , Swine Flu, and other assorted baby loving germs I have to be ready to do battle at any given moment, a germaphobe's work never ends.

Now maybe you think I'm a little nutty, but I assure you wasn't always this way . In fact, in a time before babies and husbands and coupons I worked in the belly of the beast, an Emergency Room. I have seen all variety of disease; contagious, congenital, mysterious, lethal. I can assure all you doubters that your babies, and mine, are ill equiped to do wage war with these nasties. You can pump them full of breastmilk, probiotics, even antibiotics and sometimes the germs just win, it's sad but sometimes avoidable. Let me explain.

I came across the website mamabears.com and literally jumped for joy ! The biggest culprit in the spread of disease are, our hands. People use their hands for all variety of things from tying a shoe to picking a nose, and pray tell, how often do those hard working digits get cleaned before pinching the rosey cheeks of my baby or fondeling her pudgy hands ..not often enough . Mamabears created these great "kind signs" to hang from a stroller, carseat, or any infant carrying device that read ( Your Germs are Too Big for Me , Please Don't Touch) . It's a nice way to say "BACK OFF" to the kindly stranger magnetically drawn , hands outstreatched, to touch my cooing baby at the grocery store .

If you wouldn't let your baby lick the bottom of a shoe, the packages of raw meat in the butcher's case, the money in the cash drawer, or the handle of a grocery cart you NEED this sign. Up until 90 days your baby's immune system is "open" . Think of it like opening the gas on your oven, drier, and heater in your house, lighting a match and watch it all go up in a ball of flames. Pathogens can easily travel from the nose, to the blood to the brain in an infant under 90 days old. Strangers touch all the things I just mentioned ( maybe worse) and then they are touching the gateways to your baby's insides ; the eyes, nose mouth and hands.

Old-Time Beef Stew

Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

Ingredients

2 pounds stew beef
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 medium onion, sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
3 large carrots, sliced
3 ribs celery, chopped
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions

Brown meat in hot oil. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove. Add carrots and celery. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth. Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.

The Duggars : lessons in parenting

There's no handbook we get when we give birth to our children. It may sometimes seem like our parents knew everything while we wander around aimlessly simply trying to keep our heads above water with our own kids. A few weeks back I heard the sad news of Michele Duggar giving birth to her 19th baby prematurely. Wether you like, dislike or could care less about "super birthers' like Michele, any mother who has raised 19 decent kids in my opinion, can be considered an expert. So I navigated my way to the family website and came across Michele and her husband's tips on child rearing .

The one tip that jumped out at me was the tip to "praise 10 times more than you punish" . This is probably the most important and difficult aspect of raising a child for me, because that is not how I grew up, and that is not my "natural" instinct. As part of my New Years Resolution to find ways to improve myself I think it's especially important to improve the biggest part of who I am and that's a mom. In every career field you have , sometimes mandatory, staff development programs, and in my working life I attended more seminars than I can shake a stick at . So to me the Duggar's website is a Mom Seminar to improve my parenting skills.

Praising 10 times more than you punish is pretty simple but important step in developing children who have good self esteem, after all how would you respond to someone nagging you all day ( if you're not sure just ask my husband , but that my friends is another resolution all together)) . Wouldn't you feel better about yourself if someone instead praised all the things you did right ? The Duggars also don't believe in empty praise , which I think this generation has confused with real praise . The Duggars praise character traits instead and not actions : for example :

Child picked up their toys independantly

Wrong way : Good Job picking up that stuff

Duggar Way : You are very responsible picking up your toys by yourself , GREAT job !

Learning to FLY ! No more CHAOS in 2010

Do you know someone that is super organized, from their coupon files to their well stocked pantry, everything is always in it's place and their sink is always sparkley clean ? I don't, but in 2010 I want to be THAT person. I am always amazed at people who have it all together and in 2010 , I plan on being one of them .

The first area of my life I need to address is the house. It's not a disaster, at least to the naked eye, but you could go into any room and find at least 20 things that don't belong there. For example I had friends over for a Kiddie New Years party/Playdate and after all the fun was over I noticed, to my embarassment, 2 pairs of DH UNDERWEAR were on the arm of the lounge chair in my livingroom ! They were clean but somehow didn't quite make it into the laundry basket the rest of my folded clothes made it into ..oooops .

I am tired of the CHAOS , "can't have anyone over syndrome" . If someone just showed up on my doorstep on any given day I would be embarassed . No more. I came across a plan , not just an idea of a plan but a step by step plan to be more organized, neater, and less stressed in 2010 and it's called FlyLady . Marla Cilley , aka THE Fly Lady used to have CHAOS , but she found a way to get it together and after 10 plus years in CHAOS recovery she is passing on her very smart tips in a daily step by step email series to get the rest of us into CHAOS recovery as well.

I can only compare Fly Lady to Weight Watchers for the disorganized. It is a little instruction and a whole lot of support. You will actually have people cheering because your kitchen sink is clean "that's the first step to cutting the "CHAOS'. Do you have a little monster, I do . He stands about 3 feet tall , weighs around 31 lbs and is 2 and a half . There is no more frightening beast than our little monster and he bears his fangs and claws at least 20 times daily . Kicking screaming, throwing and the ever annoying whine are all too common in my house. My husband and I are scratching our heads, wondering what happened to our sweet and cuddly baby who never cried, slept 12 hours a night pretty much from the start and cried so infrequently we would actually be concerned when he did.

In 2010 I have decided to be a chart person, I see all these charts at friends' homes and I think they are nice visual reminders to do things, or in the case of our little monster to act a certain way . New Years Resolution Part 3- Saving on your Medical Bills

Medical Bills can be one of life's most unexpected and expensive expenses. If you have insurance some of these costs can be defrayed . If you don't have insurance there are ways you can save on medical expenses for yourslef and your family . You might think resolving to spend less on medical care is impossible, think again

Medical Care : If you are out of work or are not covered by health insurance in Las Vegas you can visit MiniCare . With a new clinic opening near Meadows Mall , you can get medical care for some minor illenesses, medication refills, sutures etc.. The cost is just $22.00 per clinic visit, which is far less than the usual $50-$100 or more co-pay you would be charged for a non emergent visit to an ER , and less expensive than a Minute Clinic or other Quick Care. You can also visit the Southern Nevada health district for routine medical care if you are uninsured.

In the event of an emergency, meaning a life or limb threatening condition, you can not be refused care in an Emergency Room anywhere in the Las Vegas Valley . You can also save a significant amount of money by not calling an ambulance for non -emergencies , they won't get you into the ER any faster than walking yourself through the front door . Most ambulance transports will cost you roughly $500 , and if your problem did not warrent an ambulance your insurance company can and may refuse to pay the charges, leaving you with a heafty and unneccessary bill.

Speaking of emergencies it is always cheaper to treat a problem before it becomes an emergency or develops into a more serious condition. Regardless of your financial situation keeping yourself and your family healthy is a good investment.

Prescriptions : Saving on prescriptions is as easy as pre planning your purchases. By simply ordering routine medication quarterly you could save between 20 and 30% . You can also speak with your doctor about doubling your prescription . For example if your script is for 50mg , and there is a 100mg formula available , and the pill is conducive, ask your doctor to up your prescription . By purchasing a 3 dollar pill splicer you could save even more than 30% . While you are at the doctor find out if your medication is available in generic form , or if there is a similar and cheaper medication you could be taking Just as in clothing or at the grocery store, even in medicine you are paying more money for a name.

You should participate in a Pharmacy rewards program, like the one offered at CVS. You Earn 1 Extra Buck , good in store, when you fill 2 prescriptions with your CVS card. There are many ways to use those Extra Care Bucks and save alot of money on other non prescription medicine and every day items. Visit I Heart CVS for information about Pharmacy Reward Programs.

Dental Bills : prevention is the key to saving money on dental bills. Courtesy of Oral B I was able to have a Q and A about dental hygiene and our children with Dr. Jennifer Salzer, mother of 4 and Dentist/ Orthodontist . These are Dr. Salzers suggestions for how to prevent costly dental issues from the start

.Q1: When is the best time to start a brushing routine with children and what Oral-B products should we be using . Any tips for how to make this a productive and enjoyable experience would be appreciated.

A1. It is never too early to start a brushing routine with children! Oral health is an area that deserves attention from an early age, but unfortunately it is often overlooked. Poor oral health can lead to other issues as the child grows, so it’s important to instill proper habits from the beginning. Parents can even start as early as 4-24 months, because proper oral care for children begins before the first tooth erupts.

To make brushing more enjoyable for children, parents can try the following:
Parents should brush their teeth with their child to set a good example. It also helps children to learn by watching and imitating their parent.
Sing your child’s favorite song, like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” or play a song from their favorite singer for the two minutes while they are brushing their teeth.
Give your child a toothbrush that is designed to appeal to a toddler who is learning to brush and whose baby teeth are growing in, like Oral-B Stages 2, which is designed to effectively reach all teeth, with its narrow head, simple bristle pattern and Power Tip.
For younger children, when their first teeth begin to appear, parents should brush teeth using a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush with a cushioned head to help protect babies’ tender gums, like Oral-B Stage 1 toothbrush.
It’s important that children two and older use fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent decay as their teeth continue to develop. Q2: When do children need to have their first dental appointment?

A3. The bacteria that leads to dental caries can be contagious, as all bacteria is, however, in order for a "cavity" to form, the bacteria feeds on carbohydrates and forms sticky plaque. Therefore, dental caries can be prevented with proper oral hygiene.

Q4: Are bad teeth hereditary?

A4: It is not known for certain if "weak" teeth are passed on from generation to generation, but it is common for bad brushing habits to be "inherited." If a parent doesn't properly care for their mouth, it is unlikely that they will teach their children to be diligent.

Q5: Do crooked milk teeth foreshadow crooked adult teeth?

Q5: If the primary teeth are crowded, that is an indicator that there will not be enough room for the permanent teeth, and they will likely be crowded too. Idealy, "baby" teeth should have spaces between them.

Q6: What’s worse, thumb sucking or a pacifier (and when should parents break the sucking habit)?

A6: While comforting for a baby, both the pacifier and thumb sucking can alter the shape of a child's mouth. Usually, thumb sucking is a harder habit to break (since it can't be taken away!), so thumb suckers tend to hold on to the habit longer, leading to more malpositioning of the teeth. Parents should try to take pacifiers away by 6 months if possibly, although any mother knows, sleep is everyone's main goal at this stage, so it will be difficult!

Q7: Is there anything we can do to avoid more expensive dental procedures in our children, like braces, extractions, fillings?

A7: Practicing good dental care now can help both parents and their children avoid emergency treatments that can be painful and expensive later. This includes brushing three times a day after each meal and flossing at least once a day (parents should start flossing their children's teeth as soon as they see that teeth are touching). Eating a balanced diet is also important, as well as limiting between-meal snacks. Lastly, it is important to visit the dentist every six months for professional cleanings and oral exams.

Q8: Where can parents go to get dental care for their children if they do not have dental insurance?

A8. Some options for parents with no dental insurance include free or low-cost clinics and dental schools. There are usually dental schools in large cities that provide lower cost dental care by students under the supervision of highly educated and trained dentists.

In Las Vegas parents can obtain free or low cost dental care for themselves and their children from UNLV's Dental school and there is also Dentalville practices that offer some affordable programs for children without dental insurance.

On the Table- Easy Boil in a bag Christmas Omlettes

I have to give a big thank you to the culinary genius Paula Dean for this On the Table idea , that can be as cheap as you like but is OH so SImple, quick and Easy. I'll be using this for my Christmas Morning Breakfast that I throw for my family , Parents and Sister. My husband and I usually rise at the crack of dawn to get ready for the AM Feast ..but this year we'll be sleeping in ( as long as our rambunctious 2 year old will allow !)

Boil in a Bag Omlette

You'll need
Ziploc Bags 1/pp
Eggs 2/pp
Assorted Omlette grub in little bowls
I'll Have
Goat Cheese , Black olives, Cubed Cooked Canadian Bacon, cooked Mushrooms, Cheddar Cheese, Cooked Onion pepper combo ( the kind you steam in the bag in the Micro), Chopped pre-cooked Jimmy Dean Sausage, Diced Tomatos.

You can cook and place all your fixin' bowls the day before .
When it comes time to prepare the Omlettes boil a large pot of water. Crack 2 eggs into each ziploc bag, place the fixin's each guest would like in their baggy. seal and mash with hands until well blended. Pop your bags in boiling water 8-10 minutes.

I'll be toasting large loafs of crusty bread in the oven with just butter along side my Apple / Pear Bake which is also super simple.

Chop up apples and pears ( Cored , small-medium slices) Cover in a Cinamon Sugar mix ) You can prepare this the night before. Take some biquick and make a small batch of pancke batter , pour on top of the fruit mixture in a greased oven pan. Place in the oven at 425 approximately 20 minutes. I eye ball it and when it looks golden brown it's done !

Orange Juice, Coffee, Tea and some store bought Danish and I'm DONE . This meal should take around 45 minutes to make 2 Pans to wash and I can actually sit down and enjoy the morning !

1/2 Onion (Free from Chuck roast deal)
1 /2 Stick Butter ( Free w/ Glazier's coupon)
Salt, Pepper, Garlic flakes (Pantry)

Directions
Clean and chop Cabbage in quarters
Coarsely Chop Onion
Clean and Cube Potatos
Place in pot and fill 1/2 way with water ,add 1 tablespoon salt and boil until tender

Place Sausage in frying pan and add a patty of butter . Fry on medium low until casing is crisp.

After Cabbage mix is cooked , drain well.
Return to pot and melt butter
add a teaspoon-tablespoon of Garlic Flakes
add a teaspoon of Black or White pepper
mix

Serve along side the Sausage . I like to dip mine in Spicy Brown Mustard .
Serves 4
Total Cost :4.08 plus pantry supplies ..approx .30 = $4.38

New Years Resolution Part 2- Saving on your utilities

Did you know that the average American family spends between 6 and 12% of their income on utilities? Las Vegans in particular spend around 12% on average due to our excessively hot summers. Based on our hypothetical family of 4 with a $40,000 a year income, using the tips mentioned below you could shave 3% or $1200 off your annual utility bills, that would surely pay for a nice family vacation or further improvements to the energy efficiency of your home, which could be a tax write off as well.

Water: If it's yellow let it mellow is not the only way to save on your water bill. By simply installing an aerator ( around $3.00 at Home Depot) you can cut the gallons/minute on your faucets without sacrificing water pressure, from 2-3 to1/2 a gallon. If you have leaky toilets you are wasting upwards of 200 gallons of water and a drippy faucet 2700 gallons. Make sure everything is in good working order . Forget about using the dishwasher or washing machine when it's half full, load them up and run them to save thousands of gallons every year.

Electricity: You don't have to read by candlelight to save on electricity , there are some easy ways to cut down on your electric usage. Unplug everything that's not actively in use. Gadget chargers continue to draw energy even when your gadgets aren't charging. Do you need to keep the TV plugged in when no one is watching it? How about the toaster, coffee pot, or that alarm clock in a spare bedroom ? Do a room by room assessment of your home and unplug anything not being used. Did you know that there is not a clothes drier in the world that can earn an energy star label ? They are the worst energy users in your house, so stop using them ! Hang clothes on a clothes rack in your bathtub and use the drier to fluff clothes if necessary or in emergencies.

Gas: Check your water heater. Set it on 125 ( if it's hotter than that) , and if it's built before 2004 buy it a jacket. Wash clothes on cold and turn the thermostat down 1 degree in winter. Lowering your thermostat by just 1 degree can save you 5% on your bill ! Seal all windows in winter and invest in socket plugs, the kind you buy to keep little fingers away from electrical outlets . This will cut down on drafts. Speaking of drafts, make sure your doors' weather stripping are doing their jobs . Do you have rooms that are not in use? Close the vents and doors to these rooms so you don't have to heat or cool them.

To save money on all these things, and this is the easiest tip to implement of them all, use a cash back credit card to set up auto billing. If your debit card does not have a cash back program try signing up for a PayPal debit card, which is free and will earn you 1% cash back or $400 a year.

Aside from the money you'll save , being frugal with your utilities is one easy way to help with conservation of resources for everyone. Aside from purchasing an aerator ( $3) all these methods are free to implement and could save you and the planet . Once you have saved your money, consider making larger investments in your home's energy efficiency, from solar panels ( getting off the grid) to a tankless water heater, you could save even more money and have your investment pay for it's self in money saved.

On the Table Tonight- Split Pea and Ham Soup

These are a few of My Frugal Recipes : a New Feature on Poor Mom . Hope you enjoy.

Split Pea and Ham Soup
1 cup chopped onion .Free Glaziers
3 Carrots Free Glaziers
1 teaspoon vegetable oil Pantry
1 pound dried split peas .89 x 2 Smiths
1 pound ham Steak Bone in 2.39 Smiths
salt and pepper to taste Pantry

Chop up your Ham Steak into bite size pieces Reserve Bone
Saute with Onion about a minute
Add cleaned Dry Peas, Chopped Carrots to Onion and Ham mix , throw your bone back in.
Pour 2 cups H2O to 1 Cup Peas. Cook Covered 2 hours on Medium until peas are disintegrating. Stir occassionally to prevent sticking/ burning . Add H2O as necessary to mintain a thickness you prefer. If you like a creamier soup use about a 1/2 cup of Potato Buds at the end and mash peas a bit with a potato masher.

I serve this with Biscuits or a loaf of warm bread ( Whatever's Cheaper! )

Pass the Turkey: Easy, Cheap, and Fast ways to prepare your feast

Turkey day can be a real pain in the neck. Even though I don't have the responsability of cooking the bird this year or any year(For this I am eternally GRATEFUL !) I do buy a few Birds after Thanksgiving and prepare them for my family. I can make a whole turkey dinner for much less than $5.00 a meal. Here's my tips you can ue for a cheap Thanksgiving feast on Thanksgiving or whenever the urge strikes.

The Bird: I remember many a Thanksgiving as a kid where 3-4 glasses of water were required to wash down a dry, dry, dry bird. Then Reynold's came out with a bag for oven cooking and we never had a dry Turkey again. If you don't want to spend the cash on Oven cooking bags, use my little trick ...Cook your bird upside down. Sure won't be pretty but the white meat will be very juicy !
Stuffing the bird and cooking is not recommended, but in my opinion the stuffing doesn't taste half as good prepared outside the bird. So stuff the bird, and remove it after Tom is all cooked up. To lessen the risk of salmonella and to get a nice crust on your stuffing, place it in a oven roasting dish , drizzle with some pan juices and a half stick of butter cut into patties and toss it back in the oven on 350 for about 1/2 an hour.

Stuffing: Go to the bakery, Bread Department and get some nice crusty bread that's a day or 2 old ( useually around 75% off) chop your bread into cubes at home and leave out to get stale. Then you'll season and toast your bread chunks ; chop up carrots, onion, celery, apples, and rasins and place them in the bird.

Side Dishes: I love the side dishes, probably more than the turkey. Sweet potatoes are the easiest . Clean and cube your sweet potatoes. Place in an oven proof pan. Sprinkle with salt, brown sugar and a 1/2 cup orange juice . Roast at 350 uncovered until soft. You can top with marshmallows and allow to bake 5 minutes more until they're melted.
Green bean casserole is another favorite . Here is a link to the casserole I make.

Desserts: I'm no baker, but I love the smell of baked treats in my kitchen. You'll never catch me rolling out pie crusts but I have been known to make a brown betty or ten :) You don't need to stick with Apples for your brown betty, cause I sure don't. Here are some variations you can serve for your thanksgiving desserts and a great video for my favorite brown betty , Sweet Potatoes. I use fresh sweet potatoes ( over baking some from the prior recipe, but use canned if you like)
Brown Betty Varieties
Pear and Honey
Rum Apple ( Substitue 2 shots spiced rum for other liquid )
Cran-Apple (just toss about 1 cup of dry cranberries in with your apples)
Banana Mango (cut your bake time by 5 minutes)

Glazier's Food Marketplace cares about YOUR opinion, really !

It seems that someone at Glazier's is following my blog, the Director of Operations Randy Kersten. I received a email apologizing for the negative experience I had at Glazier's last week. I must say I was taken by surprise, as I did not expect any response let alone a 2 page letter of apology and explanation of Glazier's policies etc.. It seems Mr. Kersten has been following this blog for a while and was disheartened to read a negative review of his store, and sincerely requested my input into how Glazier's could improve, going so far as to give his personal cell phone number.

Ok, Poor Mom was impressed and will give Glaziers another shot. I responded to Mr.Kersten's letter with a few suggestions for how Glazier's could stand out from the Goliath chain supermarkets in Las Vegas and give my readers a true value for their grocery dollars. My suggestions were
1. To obviously better train the cashiers on how to handle coupons. Wouldn't it be nice to be treated like every other customer for a change and not some 3 headed anomaly.
2. Get some better promotions (most of these are sponsored by the manufacturers) possibly Catalina machines which are the norm in all supermarkets.
3. Bring prices in line with the larger chains across the board. Keep those super low prices on their Produce, meat and name brand deli.
4. And the Coup de Gras, double and triple coupons. I'd drive (and have driven) to stores in neighboring states to get some great deals on items for my stockpile. How FANTASTIC would it be to have a supermarket in town that doubled or even tripled some coupons !

There were other suggestions but these are key,I think, to getting and keeping customers shopping at Glazier's . I think/hope Mr. Kersten will take and implement these suggestions so that all Vegas Shoppers can have a uniquely positive and money saving experience at Glazier's Food Marketplace. Why I am NOT Shopping at Glazier's Food Marketplace this week

Let me preface this article by saying I had such HIGH hopes for Glazier's Food Marketplace, I even gave them a nauseatingly sweet review. I was a little in love with the possibilities an independent grocer could bring to the market here in Las Vegas. I feel a bit like a woman scorned, and we all know hell hath no fury ....
Here's what happened.
Last week I went on my ususal Glazier's shopping trip. Planed out my $25.00 purchase , sorted through my coupons, clipped Glazier's coupons for my freebies. I did my shopping and hauled my cart full to the cashier. Now is where we encounter my problems.
1. Subtotal before coupons $25.86 - $10.00 in MC Coupons=$15.86 . Cashier proceeds to look confused as she gets to the Glazier's coupons for their 4 freebies. "You have to spend $25 she tells me." "I did" I proceed to explain. "I will pay for it with 10.88 in cash and the rest coupons" She proceeds to call over the front end manager who states that it is Glaziers policy for the total to be $25 after coupons , but since she can not show me where it states that, she goes ahead with the 4 Glazier's coupons.
2. She gets to the Glazier's coupon for a Free Bag of Fresh Express salad. She starts rifling through my bags and declares that I only have 1 purchased. Again the front end manager is called over and the issue is using 2 coupons (one store and one MC on the same item) After explaining that I am using a MC and a Store coupon, or trying to explain she looked like I was speaking to her in Swahili. She goes to the manager for clarification. When she returns she states " We're not honoring our coupon unless you get another bag of salad. I asked why and she said the manager stated no one walks out of the store with free items . REALLY, well than I guess I won't be walking back INTO this store for a while. She tries telling me I couldn't do this at any other store and I start laughing, obviously she doesn't read my blog. I do that ALL the time, in fact I routinely pay tax only on my purchases. She rolled her eyes, like maybe I should continue to shop in fantasy land !

Now I'm going to be fair here. If you want to drive to Glazier's one location in Las Vegas and take full advantage of their dirt cheap produce and meat sales, Poor Mom won't hold it against you. In fact in a month or two I'll probably break down and do the same, the cheapskate wins out every time! If you want to get some good COUPON deals, however, Skip It. Their sale prices on Name brand items you could combo with coupons are not good compared to Smith's or Albertson's (rarely Von's)Sales and their generics are on average only 5% cheaper than the name brands !?!

So with high hopes dashed, a word to the wise Vegas couponer is to *sniff* leave your coupons at home if you're going to Glazier's.

Being Happy is free

Being happy doesn't cost anything. You don't need money, a nice car, designer clothes, or all the niceties in life; all you need is a good outlook despite the prognosis. Some people struggle with being happy, rejecting the feeling . I know some of those people, and it's down right depressing . They are as blind to the bright side of things as Helen Keller ( who probably had every right to be as miserable as she wanted , but instead chose to be happy, by all accounts) .

Example 1 :

My kitchen cupboards look like some one threw a grenade in there and closed the door. This is mostly due to 2 facts, my plastic storage has reproduced like a family of rabbits and my 2 year old son insists on putting away the dishes that aren't breakable. He loves this little chore and I know that not too far down the road I won't be able to PAY him to do this . So as I empty the dishwasher my little helper shoves plastic bowls, lids and bottles in , with no concern for organization. It doesn't bother me AT ALL , I'm happy he likes to help, is learning to put things ( approximately) where they belong , and he's not somewhere else creating more visable disasters like crayola wall murals or exploding toy boxes .
Some people look at my disheveled cupboards and get an instant headache and bad attitude, but I know a headache and bad attitude aren't going to clean those cupbords they are just going to make them appear 100 times worse.

Example 2 :
You may have guessed it by the title of this blog : I'm not rich . This doesn't depress me, I never expected to be rich . I look at what I have as opposed to other people , without comparing and being jealous. When I start to feel a little down that my house is too small, my car doesn't work well for my family , I don't have the RV I've wanted for years I don't dwell on it , I plan for better. That's basically how I got into couponing, to reserve money to put toward all those things I want but don't have . Other people choose to bemoan the situation, complain about all they have to do to improve it and actually get MAD when other people have a taste of some good fortune.

Example 3:
I have an almost 2 and a half year old and a 6 month old. Needless to say things are loud, unruley, and slightly to extremely chaotic in my house . I'm no Mahatma Ghandi and occassionally it does get to me, but it takes a lot . Some people insist that these are the 2 worst children in America, possibly the world. I now they are acting their age and I don't expect a 2 year old to act like a five year old, so I'm not suprised or angered when he has thrown himself bodily on the floor in a tantrum screaming and thrashing to the point of almost levatating .

So in a nutshell I guess I'm a glass half full kind of gal, surrounded by glass half empty people. I find no benefit in allowing myself to worry ( excessively) or be depressed and angry , these are the only 3 emotions that are worthless in my opinion. Anger begets anger, worry begets worry , and depression begets depression , and I don't have the time or money for that . So I choose the free route, Happiness. It's not hard , it's good for me, and out of all the things I can't control it's the one thing I have 100% reign over ..It's good to be queen !

A little bit of good news for those that have seen their incomes reduced due to unemployment. With a state issued ID and a unemployment benefits check stub , you can participate in Kmarts "Smart Assist" program. Under this program you will be issued a savings card that will give you an additional 20% off Kmart brand products for 6 months. I suspect this card is also good on their clearance merchandise as well, which usually contains some Kmart brand products and can be used in conjunction with any coupon or other discount program.

The best part about making your own yogurt is that you can grow the more expensive probiotics found in Stonyfield yogurt ,which have some almost miraculous health claims like Lactobacillus rhamnosus . Give it a try , it might just be so simple you'll never buy another yogurt at the store again.

Charity at Halloween

Some of us work hard to make , or scrape together the money to make even the most meaningless of holidays special for our kids. Halloween is supposed to be a fun time for kids to get dressed up and wreak a little organized havoc. The Kids at Jydstrup Elementary school probably won't have that luxury, you see everyone of those kids lives in an aprtment . Fully 25% of the students are abandoned after school ( meaning no adult shows up to pick up their child from school by 5pm ) and this Halloween the 5th Graders have one tiny request that I think we can help them out with ...They'd like to have a pumpkin. I received this email earlier today that i'll share with you

Jydstrup Elementary School will enter the Springs Preserve Pumpkin Decorating Contest. This is a big deal for the school since the school's name rarely gets out in the public other than news articles on abusive parents and kids who don't get picked up from school. The school is unique in that every single student who attends this school lives in an apartment - not a single student who attends the school lives in a house.

There were a lot of hoops to jump through for the new art teacher who is excited about entering all four classrooms in fifth grade in the contest. She had to get it past the principal, Ms. Slack, who doesn't believe in events, fundraisers or extracurricular activities for the students.

The entire fifth grade Jydstrup Elementary Class will have the honor of their decorated pumpkins on display at the Springs Preserve at the end of the month.

The school is in need of TWENTY EIGHT PUMPKINS or seven pumpkins per class (there are four 5th grade classes).

Glazier's Food Marketplace Sales Flier

I Have Been to the Promised Land !
OK , so it was just Glazier's Food Marketplace but I must say , I was very impressed !
Unlike their, bigger, bulkier, and almost across the board pricer chain counterparts , Glazier's was like a trip through grocery Nirvana. The aisles , very wide , a couponers paradise. The staff, so friendly I thought they might be "on Something", and produce so fresh I was looking for the famer, really.

Over all I recommend them . Just a couple things to make glazier's a shopper's true BFF .

1. The rewards program : COME ON PEOPLE , in this day and age you need the plastic thing a ma bob and the rewards dohickey and oh yeah a sale sheet on line ! Seriously , take a picture and post it on your website , i don't need a Flash version, it's NOT that Hard .

2. Make the basics more competative: Eggs, Milk , bread and General Mills Cereal ( all other cereals were well priced) made me cringe .

3. Don't call the meat department the "Sausage Factory" , unless you want someone to take a picture of that and send it to Jay Leno ! Seriously there is a huge "Sausage Factory" neon sign , I LOL.

4. Get a Pharmacy . Everyone and their brother has a pharmacy now a days and I suggest if they want to compete with the big boys , they get one too . They could put it in the Football Stadium sized Paper towel area . You could literally park 2 Mac trucks in there.

Now what I LOVED

Order and Pick up your deli meat . No waiting in line folks, use the kiosk to order and come back to pick up your cuts ! Super easy.

Freshness, Variety and Price of Produce . They are giving China's best friend Walmart a run for their money !

The food court : I am sooo holding my coupon classes and meetups there !

The staff : unnaturally friendly and very helpful

The freebie coupons . I got apple juice, apple pie, lettuce and ketschup free with their in ad coupons, SCORE !

Cheap Store bought cleaning alternatives

What are the criteria for buying vs making your cleaning supplies. For me it is
1. How well do they work
2. How much do they cost
3. How eco-friendly they are

Some things, like kitchen cleaners can easily be eliminated with a sponge and some regular old dish soap. For quick disinfection I use 1/2 water / vinegar . You can scent your vinegar with an esscential oil. Eucalyptus or Pine essential oil blends nicely and the vinegar smell disipates when dry leaving a nice odor behid thanks to the oil.

If you have a Swiffer Wet Jet , which I love , You can make your own cleaner for tile or linoleum. My Husband pried off the top and put my vinegar mixture in .

As for toilet cleaning . Pumice Sticks are sold in stores , and you can use your pumice over and over again. Before bed put 2 tablespoons of straight bleach in each toilet, swish and let sit. In the morning scrub the bowl with your pumice stone. Shiny and disinfected.

Pet urine problem in the back yard ..a Bleach/ water mixture or Vinegar/ water mixture kills the odors and germs. In high concentrations both will kill plants and grass. Vinegar is a safer bet.

Clean windows with straight white vinegar and repurposed news paper .

Glazier's Food Marketplace, Now Open !

Somehow the Grand opening of Glazier's Food Marketplace slipped under Poor Mom's radar ( I was really busy this week) . I am very excited about the prospect of a independent grocery store finally making it's way to the Vegas valley . I've called the store to get a low down on the sales and coupon policy . Very sadly I must report that they
1. do not price match
2. DO accept manufacturer's coupons ( not sure on printables)
3. and once again , they do NOT Double coupons .

I am going to write the management of Glazier's Food Marketplace, and suggest that if they really want to have a monopoly here in Vegas, that they consider having some sort of promotion to make them stand above the big chain supermarkets.Double coupons would CERTAINLY get my attention and the attention of my fellow couponers. Double ads ( like a Sunflower Market where Wednesday ads overlap , giving consumers double the savings). Poor Mom is also hoping that Glazier's will offer a rewards program and some Glazier's coupons would be great as well.

I'm hoping that someone will take the views of frugal shoppers into consideration , and in this economy many people are becoming more frugal. Once the masses associate the Glazier's name with high prices or low prices , that will stick and become their "rep" among shoppers . I'm sure they want the "rep" that brings the MOST people through their doors.

I will be making my way to Glazier's Thursday to scope out the deals , shoot some cell phone pics , and give you the 411 on what I find . Check back and see if Glaziers is truly a hit or miss for Las Vegas.

Time is already in short order here in Poor Mom's house and I am taking on a new project , which leaves little time for the $5 Dinners weekly bargain recipe segment on the website. If you enjoy reading about inexpensive recipes I encourage you to visit http://5dollardinners.com and http://1millionchickendinners.blogspot.com for your future bargain recipes .

You will , instead of bargain recipes be getting my stock up list . These are the "bargains" I will be shoppng for at my local grocery stores ( Smith's, Von's , Albertson's and soon Glazier's) I write out my lists and match coupons already , so it's NBD to post them here. If you already have a stockpile then these will be cheap or very inexpensive items you can add to your pantry .

I've heard it through the grapevine ( aka a friend on Facebook) that local Las Vegas Walmarts, maybe yours too , has Little Tikes outdoor play sets on clearance . If you are looking to pick up a sandbox, castle , or other Little Tykes outdoor play sets it is worth the trip . She snagged her kids a play castle for $25 bucks and is going back for the sand box . Mommy's little heart attack

What Mom hasn't used this phrase ? Unfortuneatly there must have been a few evidenced by the 'rash' of Stranger toddler beatings ( the most recent one in Ohio )where a much older woman put a toddler over her knee , beating the child's behind 3 times. ( makes me wonder what the heck mom was doing because as soon as someone even looked too long at my child they'ed be getting a boot to someplace really uncomfortable) That's not Quite as bad as the adult male who slapped a toddler across the face in a Walmart about a month back , but unless it's YOUR child , Poor Mom says keep your hands to your self . There, now you've all been told !

Seriously though , what on EARTH causes these people to think they are within their rights to hit a stranger , let alone a 3 foot tall one . I understand that the screaming toddler in the store is annoying . I remember a trip to target , that no matter how I tried to escape the ear shattering screams of this one particular little "brat" , it seemed that the only way I would be able to salvage my sanity or hearing that day would be to make a bee-line to the ear muff department . I did , after about 15 minutes of being chased around the store by a fleshy air raid siren , want to hit someone ; the mom though!

It's not that I don't believe in a spanking . I do . I was raised on them , and I was raised eventually with just the threat of them , and eventually i would stop in my tracks when about to embark upon some 'spankable" misadventure and recall the past spankings and weigh the potential fun of whatever action I was about to undertake and the subsequent spanking that would follow . The spanking won out every time , my parents were PROFESSIONAL spankers. I am not that avid a spanker , I reserve them like a out gunned soldier in a foxhole reserves his bullets " until he sees the whites of their eyes". My spankings are exclusively for the over 2 crowd ( namely my son ) when he does something dangerous or potentially life threatening. Run in the street ,spanking ; Jump up and down on the top landing of our stairs , spanking ; placing both hands over his 3 month old sisters face and shouting "GABI QUIET NOW !" , BIG Spanking ! I am trying to associate death with spanking , so if someone does leave a comment that I shouldn't spank , read this literature , ect.. just let me say I've read it and I'm spanking anyway because I do want to leave a lasting impression :)

The difference between me spanking my child and some random person spanking my child is that , it's MY child . I have the scars to testify ( and state law) that I ALONE reserve this right . I spank out of love , and nagging fear of death of my child at his own hand. Some random person spanks another's child out of anger and frustration , and frankly not enough guts to pick a fight with someone their own size .

By now you're probably wondering What the HECK this has to do with frugality , coupons , or saving money . Well I guess my only justification for this post is this , paying a lawyer is VERY expensive , so Keep your hands to yourself !
